Tray Size Guide
Choosing the right tray is mostly about proportion and how you plan to use it.
A smaller tray can leave more of an ottoman or coffee table visible, while a larger tray creates a more substantial, practical surface. There isn’t one correct ratio, so start with the size of your furniture, think about how much usable surface you want, then compare it with our standard tray sizes below.
We make nine standard sizes, from compact rectangular trays to large 75 × 75 cm square trays. If none of them quite suits your space, we can also make a tray to bespoke dimensions.
What size tray should I choose?
A simple way to start is:
1. Measure your surface
Measure the overall width and depth of your ottoman, coffee table or other surface.
2. Decide how much surface you want the tray to cover
Think about how you will use it. Do you need a smaller area for drinks, books and accessories, or are you looking to create a generous hard surface across the centre of an upholstered ottoman?
3. Compare your measurements with our standard sizes
Choose a tray that leaves a comfortable amount of space around it and feels in proportion with the furniture.
You don't need to follow a fixed formula. Two people with the same size ottoman may choose completely different trays depending on how they use the space.

Choosing a tray for an ottoman
A wooden tray turns part of an upholstered ottoman into a stable surface for drinks, books, candles and everyday objects.
The first thing to consider is how much of the ottoman you want the tray to occupy.
For a lighter look, choose a tray that leaves plenty of upholstery visible around the edges. If you use your ottoman in place of a coffee table, a larger tray can provide a more substantial central surface while still leaving some of the upholstered area exposed.
Before ordering:
-
measure the full width and depth of the ottoman
-
consider where the tray will normally sit
-
think about whether you still want room beside it for putting your feet up or placing other objects
-
decide whether the tray will mainly be decorative or regularly used as a practical table surface
For square ottomans, a square tray often creates a straightforward, balanced arrangement, but a rectangular tray can work equally well if you want to keep more upholstery exposed.
Similarly, a rectangular ottoman doesn't necessarily need a tray that follows its proportions exactly. The best choice depends on how you use it.
Tray sizes at a glance
45 × 35 cm
Our most compact rectangular size. Useful for smaller ottomans and coffee tables, side tables, serving drinks or creating a contained area for a few accessories.
45 × 45 cm
A compact square tray that works well on smaller square ottomans and coffee tables, or where you want to keep plenty of the surrounding surface visible.
60 × 35 cm
A medium rectangular tray with a relatively narrow profile. A useful option for rectangular ottomans, coffee tables and consoles where a deeper tray might take up too much space.
60 × 45 cm
A versatile medium-sized rectangular tray with more surface area for drinks, books and accessories. Suitable for many medium to larger ottomans and coffee tables.
60 × 60 cm
A generous square tray that can create a useful central surface on a larger square ottoman or coffee table.
75 × 35 cm
A long, narrow tray suited to larger rectangular surfaces where you want good usable length without covering too much of the depth.
75 × 45 cm
A larger rectangular tray with a generous surface area. A useful choice for substantial ottomans and larger coffee tables.
75 × 60 cm
One of our largest rectangular standard sizes. Designed for larger pieces of furniture where the tray is intended to provide a significant usable surface.
75 × 75 cm
Our largest standard square tray. Best considered for substantial square ottomans and large coffee-table arrangements where a generous central surface is required.
Choosing a tray for a coffee table
On a coffee table, the tray doesn't normally need to fill the available surface.
A smaller tray can group together objects such as books, candles, remotes and drinks while leaving more of the tabletop visible. A larger tray creates a stronger central feature and gives you more practical serving space.
For a rectangular coffee table, both rectangular and square trays can work depending on the arrangement.
On a square table, a square tray generally follows the proportions of the furniture, while a rectangular tray can create a less symmetrical layout.
For consoles, sideboards and dining tables, narrower rectangular sizes can be particularly useful where you want to organise or display objects without taking over the whole surface.
With handles or without?
All nine standard sizes are available with or without handles.
With handles
A practical choice if you expect to move or carry the tray regularly. The standard height is approximately 4.5 cm.
Without handles
A simpler, lower-profile design, particularly suited to trays that mainly stay in position on an ottoman, coffee table or other surface. The standard height is approximately 3.4 cm.
The choice is largely about how you intend to use the tray and the look you prefer.
Can't find the right size?
Not every ottoman or coffee table works neatly with a standard tray size.
We make bespoke trays for spaces where a different length, width or proportion would work better.
As a general guide, we can make:
-
square trays up to approximately 90 × 90 cm
-
higher-profile rectangular trays with handles up to approximately 120 × 75 cm
-
lower-profile rectangular trays up to approximately 100 × 60 cm
The height can also be adjusted depending on the design.
Bespoke trays are particularly useful for unusually proportioned ottomans, large coffee tables and interior projects where the dimensions need to work with a specific piece of furniture.
